Diana's work is not finished! She was elected to her first Nanaimo City Council term in 2008 and now, three years later, she's more than ready to continue the thoughtful, hard work she's so well known for.
There's a steep learning curve for rookie City Councillors, but Diana rolled her sleeves up and has earned her reputation for hard work and integrity. She's always had the ability to listen and the energy and courage to act. Now she also brings Council experience to help this next group of Councillors realize Nanaimo's huge potential. To say Diana believes in Nanaimo and its people is a massive understatement!
Diana Johnstone is a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and a celebrated community leader, recently celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary. As recipient of the Economic Development Group's
Positive Image Award (2007), Pacific Sports
Administrator of the Year Award (2007), and the
BC Community Achievement Award (2008), she has made a lasting impression on the Nanaimo community.
Committed to promoting her city and building civic pride, Diana is well known for her enthusiasm and her ability to influence others.
Putting people first is her credo. An excellent communicator who can listen, she appreciates the opinions of others and understands the wisdom of bringing in expertise when needed.
"I have served on numerous committees since moving to Nanaimo 28 years ago", says Johnstone. "I have an in-depth knowledge of Nanaimo and want to continue to be a member of the team that can maximize the City's potential while responding to the needs and desires of our citizens."
A proponent of economic growth and development, she is also aware of infrastructure issues and the need to keep residential and commercial taxes at their lowest possible level.
"Diana Johnstone stands for accountability, integrity, honesty and compassion and she has always put people first", says long time friend and colleague Donna Dash. "Nanaimo needs someone like her on city council."
A Commissioner for Parks Recreation and Culture for the past twelve years, Johnstone is a strong advocate for the protection of parks, trails and open spaces. She is also committed to continue to promote Nanaimo as a Centre for the Arts.
Johnstone pledges to help move the City forward with conscience, while addressing important social and environmental concerns.
Diana Johnstone wants to continue to enhance the efforts of the Council and City planners by supporting a vibrant blend of commercial and residential uses for downtown Nanaimo, as well promoting it as a center for arts and culture. She believes a healthy arts community helps to spur sustainable development and investment in our city. She also commits to continue to work with social agencies and the RCMP to resolve Nanaimo's social problems.
"We live in such a wonderful community, and I want to help maintain Nanaimo's status as '
The Most Desirable, Liveable, Small City in North America'. My boots and hardhat are packed and I'm ready to continue to work for you, but I need your vote- there's still so much to be done, and I can help!" --
